We are always happy to help!
Below is a list of the most commonly asked questions we have received regarding
StrongBox. If your question is not answered here, please feel free to
contact us.
What is StrongBox meant to do?
Think of it as a secure cache for assorted information, this is anything from a
piece of text, a file like a document or a photo, or an encryption key. Mostly it
is meant to store and organize all those little piece of information you have no
other place for. Stuff you're not comfortable just storing in some random file or
in an email, all of which are not encrypted. You can also use it as a secure way
of transferring information, simply drop items into the StrongBox, send off the
StrongBox (located your documents folder) file and the receiving party opens the file using the StrongBox application.
StrongBox provides the UI to store items, the encrypted file format and
the secure barrier, the rest is up to you!
Can it fill forms?
No! Though StrongBox is meant to hold similar information as form filling apps,
the idea behind it is to create a secure barrier between the encrypted content and
other applications, the exact opposite of a form filling application! With StrongBox
you are in complete control, and you can manually move information across the secure StrongBox
barrier - automation like form filling would weaken this security.
What kind of encryption does StrongBox use?
Only the best! We use the AES algorithm at 256 bits, recommended
for both its speed and security. For more information view the Wiki on AES.
What happens if I lose or forget my password?
To enhance security StrongBox does not store any password recovery information,
as a result forgetting your password means your data will not be accessible. i.e. don't lose your password.
Why is it so elusive?
Nobody knows for sure. It knows many a secret, and this has made it an often reflective, quiet kind of beast.
Why does StrongBox need .Net?
The .Net frameworks is a great foundation we chose take advantage of and build upon.
It is a standard Windows component and is distributed via Windows Update, in the
future you can expect all new applications to use it. If required the .Net Framework
will automatically install, or you can download the installer from Microsoft's website.
